Core Sport

Rugby
RGS High Wycombe has a strong rugby tradition, dating back to 1919. At RGSHW, we strive to create an ambitious, engaging and challenging environment where every player, regardless of experience in the game, is given the time and support to maximise their potential on and off the field.

For us to be able to do this, we take a player-centred approach to training and fixtures, allowing players to make their own decisions, learn from those experiences and have autonomy over their own development. The foundation of RGSHW Rugby is based around good behaviours; a strong work ethic, a positive attitude to learning, with a desire to seek mastery of the sport. These characteristics will be the foundation for their future development.

Competition is at the core of everything we do, competing intrinsically to challenge ourselves consistently, competing with each other to bring the best out of team mates, as well as externally against some of the best schools in the country.

The RGSHW fixture list includes schools such as Millfield, Whitgift and Warwick, and we enter the NatWest Cup at both U15 & U18 age groups. Rugby is played through the Autumn and Spring terms, with each age group also entered into 7’s competitions to enhance skill adaptation. We are able to field up to 20 teams on a Saturday, with the U12’s running A-F teams.

Cricket
Curricular Games Programme: During the Summer Term, boys of any ability and experience have the opportunity to play cricket during their curricular game’s session. Each week will focus on a combination of different themes and utilise a variety of coaching methods and activities to develop the three core areas of cricket; batting, bowling, and fielding (including wicketkeeping). Boys will be grouped so they are challenged at an appropriate level and maximise their potential.

Outdoor Training Programme: During the Summer Term, each age-group have a dedicated training night which is open to boys of all abilities and experiences. These sessions are designed and delivered around the needs of individuals and the team, whilst matches provide an opportunity for boys to express themselves and demonstrate their skills and abilities in a competitive environment.

Junior & Senior Development Programmes
Following a number of highly challenging and competitive trials, the Development Programmes aim to identify boys who are believed to have the potential to become future Senior, ECB pathway, and First-Class players. Each programme is limited to 20 places for boys in Years 8 and 9 (Junior Development Programme) and for those in Years 10, 11, 12, and 13 (Senior Development Programme). The programmes offer additional high-level coaching opportunities, and are designed as an enhanced addition to a player’s age-group training.

Hockey

Outdoor
Hockey is the main sport in the spring term and is offered to all boys from Year 7 through to the Sixth Form. We currently run A-D teams at U12 & U13, and A-B teams at U14 and U15, which all feed into our senior squads at U16 and U18 level. All age groups take part in their own National Cup competition.

We are lucky enough to have our own high quality, brand all weather pitch for training and matches and our hockey players also have access to our fantastic fitness suite in which they can take part in their own strength & conditioning to improve performance on the pitch.

Indoor
In the autumn term we run indoor hockey across the U14, U16 and U18 age groups, the latter two of which take part in the national championships. Training and fixtures take place on our own indoor pitch. Indoor hockey is used both as a way of preparing for the outdoor season as well as an enjoyable alternative to the 11-aside version of the sport.

Coaching
Our team of coaches brings a huge amount of experience from outside the school to benefit the players. Currently, our team has experience of both playing and coaching at National League level and coaching in the England Hockey Single System, as well as working with Senior and Junior International players.
