Late Transfer Testing (Years 8, 9 & 10)

The Royal Grammar School administers its own late transfer testing. Admission to Years 8, 9, and 10 is handled in accordance with the school’s Late Transfer Procedure.

Please note: The annual round of testing for September 2026 entry is now closed.

Timeline for September 2027 Entry

• Parents can register students for testing from 30 October.  The Registration Form will be available on this page.
• The closing date for submitting the registration form is Monday,11 January 2027 at 0900.
• Confirmation of testing arrangements will be sent by email a week before the testing date.
• Testing will take place at the school on Thursday 28 January 2027.
• Notification of results will be sent by email on or before 25 March.

Testing Criteria & Important Information

• Testing: Academic eligibility is assessed through curriculum-based tests in English and Mathematics. Students must achieve a minimum standard in both tests to qualify.

• Preparation: We do not provide sample papers. The tests evaluate current age-appropriate knowledge, and we strongly advise that coaching or heavy revision is not required.

• Waiting Lists: Qualifying does not guarantee a place, as it depends on school capacity. Instead, it allows the school to establish a waiting list of qualified students.

• Qualification Expiry: If an applicant qualifies, but a place is not available because the school is full, the qualification expires at the start of the next Annual Testing Round. To remain on the waiting list for the following year, the applicant must sit the test again.

• Catchment Area: Use the Buckinghamshire Schools Postcode Checker to view your straight-line distance from the school and confirm if your address is in the general catchment area.

• Priority Area: The school has a specific priority area within the wider catchment. You can view the Catchment Area Map and use the Priority Area Catchment Checker directly on the Buckinghamshire Council website to see how this applies to your address.

• Boarding Applicants: There is no catchment area requirement for students applying for boarding places.
