About

Looking for your next favourite book?

We're here to inspire you.

World Book Day began almost 30 years ago with the aim of promoting reading for pleasure amongst children. It was created by UNESCO in 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading and was adopted in the UK in 1997.

Yet as 7th March approaches, harried parents across the globe are scouring the internet for a fancy dress outfit of their child's favourite book character, or trying to craft a costume out of the contents of the recycling bin. Now, in a move that will no doubt be a relief to many, hundreds of schools are changing their stance as a result of the cost and environmental waste that has become associated with the event and instructing parents not to buy a costume.

Cassie Chadderton, chief executive of the charity World Book Day, said: "It is definitely true that more schools are looking for alternative ways of celebrating World Book Day and having different activities other than dressing up. We would love parents to let go of the pressure and expectations. Dressing up can be part of the fun."

With thousands of novels published each year, the Booker Prize has become a trusted kitemark of quality fiction, pointing readers towards the best of the best. For over 50 years the organisation has celebrated outstanding fiction, while providing fresh opportunities for readers to explore the hundreds of longlisted, shortlisted and winning titles in the Booker Library. They are driven by a simple belief that great fiction not only brings joy to millions, it has the power to change the way we think about the world we live in.

In our own RGS way we are keen to promote the joy of reading. RGS has a new on-line Library Catalogue where students can reserve, renew and review titles showcasing extraordinary works alongside their exceptional authors in one unique space.

We have also published RGS Wider Reading publication with over 200 fiction and non-fiction books shortlisted, with the emphasis on introducing engaging reads - click on image to read. Each department was asked to shortlist authors who have inspired them, some of whom are multi-award-winners or reached the dizzy heights of bestseller lists. Whether you're new to a subject or would like to explore it more deeply, we hope their recommendations will steer you towards literary classics and hidden gems.

Enjoy World Book Day!
