I joined Fraser Youens House in Year 9, and it would be an understatement to say that I have enjoyed every single moment since arriving. It did not take me long to discover that Boarding at RGS is an extremely pleasant environment, where everyone is valued and celebrated. Boarding has taught me to embrace new challenges and build strong and secure relationships; and is a place that rewards you for your achievements and helps you to learn from your mistakes. I currently study Economics, Politics, and History, and hope to take Politics and International Relations at university. Outside of Boarding, I enjoy playing cricket in the summer, and am a very eager football fan. I hope that I can have a positive impact on the boarders here to ensure that there is always an enjoyable and happy atmosphere at Fraser Youens House.

My name is Gareth and I’ve been a boarder for six years and am now in my final year. For my A Levels, I am studying Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Sport, and hope to study Natural Sciences or Biochemistry at university. In my free time, I play rugby for the school’s 1st XV and also enjoy participating in the school’s musical activities. I have loved every second of my boarding experience, particularly the opportunity to build close friendships. Boarding at RGS has also given me the time to pursue all of the sport, academics and music that I love without missing out on anything as I am not having to travel to school each day. This has given me extra time and is one of the greatest perks that boarding offers. As a Senior Prefect within boarding, I will be able to answer any questions you may have as well as support you in any way that I can.

My first memories of boarding at RGS are not when I joined in Year 7 but instead dropping my older brother back to Fraser Youens on a Sunday evening. RGS boarding has been a part of my life for the past 8 years and I would not change any of it for a second. Even though boarding is quite different from when I first joined, with older boarders eventually leaving etc, the community and atmosphere is still stronger than ever. Whether its playing football and touch rugby outside or just greeting one another in the corridor, boarding manages to create a connection between students, regardless of age. I am currently studying Chemistry, Biology and Maths at A Level and I am hoping to study Veterinary Science in the future. If you ever need me, you can normally find me in the school gym, out on the rugby fields and in and around the boarding house. I will be more than happy to help with any aspect of your boarding and academic life. I have had the best time in boarding. I have had the best time in boarding and I hope I can make yours just as special.

Do you ever find yourself thinking, wondering about things, life, the universe? For hundreds of years, people have speculated whether we, on this tiny insignificant planet, orbiting a relatively small, average star in a fairly average sized galaxy, are the only pieces of life in the entire universe. Or could there be something else out there? The universe is huge; you might think you have an idea about how huge, but you don’t. Even our solar system is a lot bigger than you think. The moon isn’t that far away, right? It’s pretty big in the night sky, you’ve seen lots of images and drawings of the Earth and moon in close proximity. Actually, it’s 384,400 km from Earth. You could fit 30 Earths along that distance, and if you drove there at constant speed of 100 km/h (62mph), it would take over 160 days.

It only took a small change for the MIT professor Edward Lorenz to even come up with the butterfly effect, a term he coined in 1960 whilst working on a computer atmospheric model to help meteorologists predict the weather.

The United States of America is consistently depicted as a republic, a staunch anti-imperialistic country. Ever since its birth, the country has fought empires starting with the British Empire in 1776, to the Nazi Empire, and the ‘Evil Empire’ of the USSR. The Monroe Doctrine of 1823 is clear documentation of the USA’s opposition to imperialism. The anticolonial essence of the USA in its history may place this façade over the reality of the USA’s imperialism. An empire is an aggregate of many separate states or territories under supreme rule, which contrasts with a federation, an extensive country voluntarily composed of states. This article will not argue that the USA currently is a hegemonic empire (where a country can dominate another country through influence), but it will argue that during the late 1800s and early 1900s the USA was a territorial, colonial empire akin to the European empires at the time.

Here at RGS, we are privileged to be able to provide accommodation for up to seventy boarders aged 11-18 within our modern, purpose-built boarding house, Fraser Youens.

Constructed just before the new millennium, our accommodation, facilities and the overall boarding experience we provide is consistently rated as outstanding by our students. The comfort of the boys in our care is central to every aspect of boarding life and we are delighted to say that our staff and boarders alike share a true sense of family and community, ensuring a genuine ‘home from home’ experience.

As well as access to a tutor, subject mentors and of course the staff team, you'll also have the support from your peers. In fact, over the past decade, our boarders have consistently outperformed our day students in academic results, with recent leavers achieving up to 90% at A*-B at A-Level.

Boarding at RGS allows our boys to benefit from extra time studying, which would otherwise be spent travelling to and from school, as well as the opportunity to participate in the wide range of activities available in and out of traditional school hours. The ability to socialise, enjoy in-built free time and have access to continuous academic and pastoral support is core to the success of our boarding students.

Our highest priority has, and will always be, the welfare of our students and as such, we strongly believe that boarding should not be a separation from family but instead an extension of family. Throughout their time at RGS, our boarding students will benefit from being at the core of a working partnership between their parents and our staff, designed to both nurture and promote success.

We strive to promote a feeling of family community throughout Fraser Youens and we actively encourage many of our boarders help lead this community within both the house and school.

Poker is one of the most popular card games due to its simplicity. Anyone can learn the rules of poker very quickly and all you need to play is a pack of cards and some poker chips for betting. Whilst poker is classified as a sport, there are still people who believe that it is a game of luck and that there is no way to keep winning repeatedly. In fairness, this is true in the short run, but in the long run poker is solely based on strategy and skill. Maths has become vitally important, and it factors into so many aspects of poker.
