6th Year in boarding

Fraser Youens is a lot more than just a Boarding House, it is a thriving community and some might even say family. The Boarding House is made up of many different ages and even though there could be up to a 7 year age gap boarders are still happy to mix freely. The boarding community is always evolving and changing however you can always rely on being able to go outside and kick or throw a ball about with your mates. If you are feeling under the weather or maybe you might just need some help with a piece of homework the teachers and sixth former are always there to lend a hand or some support, providing great role models for upcoming boarders. Teachers also put on an activity every day this could be from football to rock climbing or table tennis to pool giving every type of person an option to have some fun. When the House settles down in the evening to get on with any homework younger boarders and some older will go to a classroom in main school with a teacher where they can be guided and assisted by a Boarding Tutor. The Fraser Youens house is the beating heart of RGS and without it RGS would not be the same.

4th Year in boarding

Life in boarding is action-packed with new boarders and the old faces. Catching up with the friends I missed and making new ones. I find that boarding life is more organised and exciting than if I wasn’t a boarder. Having activity after school gets me a chance to run wild as the competition is high. Having a set prep session makes me focus for the period of time and get the homework out of the way. It really prepares you for the future to come.

Having the chance to stay with my friends at night is like having a sleepover everyday. During the school day, getting the chance to come back to boarding which helps me get away from the busy school and have some time at the table tennis table. The facilities we have at boarding are incredible as when the school day finishes the whole school is ours.

Having the staff that are school teachers gives us a chance to get a few questions answered. Mentoring is an excellent idea as you can get taught a subject you’re struggling with by the older boarders. I would like to summarise my account by saying that boarding for me is truly amazing as you can get so many opportunities.

Ancient History

Ancient History is a broad and fantastic course, which I would thoroughly recommend to anyone not only with a general interest in history, but also in politics, law, and the humanities in general, because what we learn of the Greeks and Romans is still significant to us today - the same types of people, the same causes of war, the same cycles of politics and society in general. Beyond this, it is an enormously useful subject by virtue of the skills it provides: the course is entirely source-based, meaning that as students we are constantly analysing and comparing ancient texts in our appraisal of events. This is a powerful teacher of the critical thinking required in so many subjects and, moreover, in life itself, not to mention the writing, communication, and argument-building skills required to put points across in essays. Most importantly, it is a fun subject. I have loved every minute of my time learning ancient history, because of the depth and variety of what we learn, not to mention Dr Matthews’ lively teaching style, which helps emphasises the importance of the ancient world to modern life. I find myself frequently able to comment with amusement on current affairs in light of events which took place in antiquity. Overall, Ancient History is a rich and enjoyable subject which imparts knowledge and skills with a wide significance.

Ancient History

Ancient History is a great subject for people with any interest in the Greeks and Romans. Whether you have done Classical Civilisation before or not, the course does not require any previous knowledge of the ancient world and is great for those starting at sixth form. I like how the subject lets you really explore certain periods of history; learning about the Fall of the Roman Republic for instance in a lot of detail is something I really enjoyed. If you like history, and want to specialise, or simply want to start something new, Ancient History is a good option.

Taking GCSE Graphics has been in my opinion one of the best opportunities that has been available to me suiting my style. I believe that both Art and Graphics provide a vast span of opportunities to both explore the different routes that it provides. They develop skills and understanding throughout the subject. This is resourced to us students from our first lesson in year 7 and couldn’t have been possible without the enthusiasm, encouragement, and engagement that our teachers at this school provide us with as they are very much part of what makes a subject like Graphics and Art so enjoyable.

When I first started studying Latin in year 7, I wasn’t sure what to expect: despite the fact that two of my siblings had studied Latin for GCSE, I didn’t know if it was the subject for me. I am very pleased to say then that Latin is one of the best subjects out their! Learning the language that formed so many languages of the modern world never ceases to feel special, and, thanks to inspiring teachers and an interesting scheme of work, learning the Latin language and exploring the culture of the ancient Romans through their own tongue is not only fun, but fascinating.

Classical Civilisation

I’ve always liked learning about history, mainly because of its significance in shaping our world today. Just thinking that nearly all current national and international events can be explained by the past hundred years is, for me at least, very exciting. And for that reason, I really like the new perspective that ancient history (taught as ‘Classics’ at GCSE) gives me. Learning about ancient civilisation and culture, in addition to modern history, is like learning about two sides of the same coin, as they’re both interconnected in an incredibly complex and fascinating way.”

Classical education provides an enormous benefit, not just to your vocabulary, but to the educative experience as a whole, improving the general experience and synergising well with other subjects, such as English or History. In short, Classical Civilisation is well worth taking, not just for its multitudinous merits on its own behalf, but also for the enormous potential benefit to the school experience.

Religious Education

Religion plays an incredibly important role in our world. For some, it’s a path to salvation. For others, it might be a way to relax the body and soul in an incredibly competitive and busy world. No matter the reason, we can all agree that an understanding of the dynamics of religion (both general and specific) are essential in the current climate, not just to gain new perspectives but also so that we are able to show a level of sensitivity to people of different backgrounds and religions. And this could not be more true than in a country as culturally and religiously diverse as the UK, whose capital London has a non-British population of about 40% (testimony to the huge range of religions practised in this relatively small geographic area). And, in a nutshell, that’s why I think RS (in addition to being very interesting and eye opening) is such a hugely valuable and important subject.

The RGS music teachers are able to make lessons fun and engaging. Students are also given the chance to work with others at the Annual House Music Competition, my favourite event in the music calendar as it brings out the competitive side of each house during a great afternoon of music and entertainment. All of these reasons make the music department a very friendly part of the school.

Physics

I love pretty much everything to do with physics, maths and engineering. I really enjoy learning about how the world around me works, as well as the spaces I cannot see myself such as at the sub-atomic level and at the macro-scale of the entire universe. Being a keen astronomer, I have a special interest in the mechanics of gravity and the bizarre and alien anomalies that initially seem impossible yet can be explained easily through wonderful but obscure interactions dictated by simple physics.

Geography

At my time here at RGS, I’ve really enjoyed the Geography lessons. They have always been interesting and interactive, whether that’s completing exciting projects such as High Wycopoly or learning about glaciation in the Lake District, I have always found my self enjoying the subject. One of my favourite projects of both Year 7 and 8 has been High Wycopoly, the objective is to create a game of monopoly but substituting the locations for notable landmarks in High Wycombe. Similarly, Geography has been very useful even outside the classroom as now I am able to identity geographical features created by glaciers and it has widened my knowledge of Countries, Cities and obscure locations.

When I first joined RGS I had very low standards of Geography as a subject and wasn’t expecting it to be a subject I would enjoy, however from my first Geography lesson in year 7, it became one of my favourite subjects as the Geography teachers at RGS teach in a way that’s very comprehensive and enjoyable, with projects, field trips and lots more as part of the Geography experience. Our HighWycopoly projects in year 7 was a very fun task that let us get to know our local area as well as people in our class. To this day I still look forward to the next Geography lesson in my week and whatever it will bring.

French is a great subject to learn because it’s really satisfying - you make progress really quickly and are able use it in the real world and in little parts of everyday life (not to mention on holiday!). It’s surprisingly varied and you never feel like you’re covering the same topics without something more being added to make it more interesting. It’s a great feeling to feel like part of a wider world, especially with the French language and culture so important internationally.

English

When I first arrived at the RGSHW I was genuinely indifferent about studying English as I had never particularly enjoyed it at my last school. How wrong could I have been! My Year 7 teacher was inspiring, fun and helpful. English isn’t just about being given something to write and being told to get on with it – instead, most of the lessons involve analysing how to improve your work and the critical things to avoid. I have loved the opportunity to discuss my work as it develops, and to receive really honest feedback along the way – good and bad! I’ve loved the creative writing and, surprisingly enough, analysing poems – trust me, it’s fun once you get into it. I know everyone says this to you all the time, but if you genuinely try your hardest, you can’t help but enjoy English at the RGS.

Design Technology

DT is a brilliant subject that I look forward to every week because there is nothing else like it in my timetable. DT brings out creativity while considering practicality, as I am quite logical this makes it a brilliant subject for me. In Year 8 we made snappers which was very fun, it also encouraged litter picking around the school. In this project we had a lot of freedom in design and manufacture while being given support and guidelines. Overall it’s a great subject that I would recommend to every student.

Design Technology

DT is an enjoyable subject because of its practical nature and its problem solving. This is different to many subjects in school. When designing products, you can then let your creativity flow and think of the best options to solve your chosen problem. In Year 10 we were tasked to make sweet dispensers and I thoroughly enjoyed drawing out possible designs to suit the many problems, which included portion sizes and colour schemes for the product. These are just two examples of what you need to think about and when you come to your final design, you can compare it with your colleagues in your class and see how they arose to the problem. This is the most enjoyable part of DT because everyone has their own ideas and can test them and give their views about why they think their design is the best.

Design and Technology is a great subject, and one that I would highly recommend as an option. As a subject it brings together many skills such as art, science and maths. So it appeals to not only the creative but also those who are more inclined towards mechanics. I have always enjoyed my DT lessons mainly because of the excellent teachers who are very supportive and also because I get to design and create amazing things. As someone who wants to enter the field of medicine, I can say for a fact that DT will be a very useful subject as it has many applications, from designing artificial limbs to creating state of the art medical equipment. In fact this subject will equip you with a variety of skills which can help you, no matter which career path you choose.

I also admire DT because of the way it challenges me when problem solving.

Chemistry

One of the many reasons I love learning chemistry at the RGS is because it’s taught in a brilliant manner which explains the concepts in a way that everyone can understand and remember for the future. All of the topics are really exciting and the practicals we do demonstrate science in an entertaining way that makes the lessons fun and interactive. I personally enjoy chemistry because I’ve always wanted to understand how the universe works and why things exist the way that they do and chemistry, for me, is one of the ways that I can achieve that. When I joined the RGS the thing that I was most excited about was getting into a science lab for the first time and I wasn’t disappointed.

I love chemistry because out of all the sciences it has the most enjoyable practicals which require focus and you have to act with maturity due to the safety risks. Furthermore, chemistry involves numbers and equations which I enjoy since I like my maths and the equations rely on problem solving which I also enjoy. Adding onto this, I find the teaching department at the RGS for chemistry very thorough meaning learning is enjoyable as the teachers guarantee you have full understanding.

German

Choosing German as an MFL opens a world of opportunities. It is an amazing subject because you get to learn about and escape to an entirely new culture. Countless engineering, manufacturing and technology companies are German owned, meaning working in Germany, even for a few years, could really establish your career. Benefits can be seen not only in Germany but also for example also in Austria or Switzerland. Having a solid foundation of the language makes it a great deal easier to spend time in German speaking countries. Germany remains the largest economic force in Europe, so picking German will help your understanding of European politics and business.

German, in my opinion, is the most interesting and curiosity-based subject at RGS. I particularly picked German at the end of year 7 because I wanted to learn an entirely new language. I had learnt French and other romance-based languages in the past; however, this time I wanted to have an open mind and chose a totally new subject. I believe this was the best decision I have made at this school. German requires a lot of thought, and is great for students who love to have a challenge. In year 7, you will discuss culture and it is a nice distraction from other subjects.

Anyone can learn the rules of poker very quickly and all you need to play is a pack of cards and some poker chips for betting. Whilst poker is classified as a sport, there are still people who believe that it is a game of luck and that there is no way to keep winning repeatedly. In fairness, this is true in the short run, but in the long run poker is solely based on strategy and skill. Maths has become vitally important, and it factors into so many aspects of poker.

German

As we live in an increasingly inter-connected world, the need for humans to empathise with each other is greater than ever. Therefore, there has never been a more important time to explore different languages and cultures, especially the ones around us. In German you will not only learn a language which is spoken in 5 countries, but you will also learn about the most interesting facts about Germany to a level where you can have really interesting conversations with people from all backgrounds about the history of Germany. It has been particularly enjoyable to learn about festivals, food, and all the other aspects integral to the culture, such as how the past has and is affecting the politics and the people of Germany to this day. The reason why German trumps all other MFL subjects is because Germany is known to be incredibly prominent in technological development, and is also seen as an economic powerhouse. German could be argued to be one of the most valuable subjects to choose for A Level.
