House System

The vision for the RGSHW House System is to create a lasting community spirit and cohesion between all year groups. To provide a well-organised platform for individuals of all abilities and interests to compete for their House, in regular and worthwhile competition. The six Houses add an additional, high-quality dimension to a world-class school.  In addition, the House system is student-led to ensure an extra degree of independence.

The House system is at the very heart of school life at the RGS as boys derive great pride and enjoyment from their sense of identity through their involvement with their House.

Each RGS boy is assigned to one of the six Houses on entry to the School. Boys are carefully and fairly allocated to Houses. These are named after Royal Houses - Balmoral, Kensington, Buckingham, Sandringham, St James and Windsor - has its own distinctive character is led by a senior member of staff and a group of Year 13 boys led by the House Captain.

The regular meetings and competitive events serve to produce a close-knit, cohesive group which provides strong links between age-groups and supportive, vertical pastoral structure. It also serves to create extra opportunities for pupil participation in co-curricular activities and is designed to reflect both talent and participation.

The Houses compete in numerous activities throughout the year which allows all boys to represent their Houses in a range of events from sports to public speaking, quizzes to cookery competitions. The main House events are the Hughenden Run, the Music Competition and Sports Day in the Autumn, Spring and Summer Term.
