Cricket

Cricket at RGS
Cricket is the main sport in the summer term and is offered to all boys from Year 7 through to Sixth Form. Cricket is currently expanding at RGS and we will be running 18 teams this summer. We take part in a variety of fixtures including both Saturday and mid-week games as well as local and national cup competitions. Highlights for the 1st XI include an annual match against the MCC and the end of season RGS Cricket Festival against the five other RGS schools across the country. The school has some excellent facilities for a state school including two adjunct cricket squares, pavilion, four astro outdoor nets and three indoor nets.

Matches and Training
If your son wishes to be considered for selection for matches, he should attend training sessions both in games lessons and after school. With a high number of boys wishing to represent the school at cricket, he may have to patient and wait for his opportunity if not initially selected for a team.

All fixtures are published on our Fixtures Website and your son should check there and the cricket notice board for team sheets and details of matches. In the event of poor or inclement weather please check our Twitter page @RGSHWSport and the Fixtures Website as this is where the latest information will be published.

Wisden Schools Cricket of the Year
Teddie Casterton, 1st XI captain 2017, was awarded the Wisden Schools Cricket of the Year for 2018 after his phenomenal season which saw him score 1300+ runs including 6 hundreds with a highest score of 267*. This was a fantastic achievement and past winners include Johnny Bairstow, Jos Butler and James Taylor

Friends of Cricket
The Friends of Cricket is a parent run group whose aim is to raise funds for the provision of cricket at RGS. The majority of the money raised helps pay for additional coaching during games and training sessions, transport to and from fixtures, cricket teas, umpires, match balls and major capital projects as and when required. The support of parents is essential for the running of cricket at RGS and without fundraising, we would not be able to provide the level of cricket we do.

There are two main ways FOC raises money:
1.       Membership – to join FOC we ask that you make donation £84 pa. This can then also be gift-aided, if you are eligible, which means we can then benefit from an additional 25% on top of your donation at no extra cost to you or the school. If you wish to join FOC please click on the payment link below.
2.       Fundraising Events – The FOC Spring BBQ launches the cricket season.  An opportunity to meet Mr Fletcher and the FOC Committee with a BBQ, bar and games on the field.  The Annual Cricket Awards - a meal and award ceremony celebrating the performance and achievements of all our players.  There is also the opportunity to purchase tickets to the Bat Oar Ball, the school's annual fundraising event for all sports at RGS.  This three course sit down dinner includes several fundraising games, a main and silent auction and a live band to finish off the night.  Tickets to all events are available to purchase from Little Box Office.
