Support and nurture students to:

Develop a high sense of self-worth and be inspired to contribute positively to society.

Develop the motivation, confidence and competence with their skills and knowledge within Physical Education, Sport and Physical Activity.

Develop personal responsibility for lifelong engagement in a healthy and physically active lifestyle.

PE, Games and Recreational Sessions

Multi Skills, Net Games, Gymnastics and Athletic Development have featured within Physical Education lessons this term. These activities have been complemented with discussions around the themes of Resilience, staying Grounded and Health and Well-being.

Within Games sessions, the Hughenden Run was back in full force just before October Half Term as part of the boys ‘Pit Stop’ learning. All students demonstrated excellent resilience and work ethic to complete the 2.6-kilometre course. As shown in the picture, we were fortunate enough to have some fantastic weather as well! We will be completing this event again in April 2022.

The Hughenden run is not only an individual challenge, but it also features on the Inter-House Sports Calendar. The end to the Christmas term has also included another round of Inter-House Sport. Football, Table Tennis, Badminton, and a challenging Team Endurance event were on the agenda. All students from Year 7 – Year 12 competed for glory and represented their house with pride!

It has been fantastic to re-introduce recreational breaktime and lunchtime sessions and to see so many boys enjoying being physically active. A huge thanks must go to our Year 13 student ambassadors for all their hard work and support with these sessions. In addition to these recreational and core sport sessions, we have been able to commence more formalised clubs, training, and competitions in several different Sports.

Cross Country
Within the first term, we have entered several Cross-Country events for our Junior, Inters and Senior teams. Our Inters and Seniors qualified for the Regional Competition in Cambridge with Alden Collier finishing 1st in the Inters race; we are striving to achieve greater success in this event in years to come! It has also been great to see regular attendance at our Wednesday Cross Country Club. Thank you to Miss Caesar and Mr Gallagher for all your hard work supporting this programme.

Swimming
Our Inters and Seniors swimmers have been extremely busy competing in the Hertfordshire and Wycombe Abbey swimming leagues. We are currently well-placed to progress to the finals in both competitions.

It is great to see our junior swimmers also commence their swimming journey at RGS. The future looks bright for this group of boys, coupled with the prospect of a new-look pool at RGS!

We had many of our inters and senior swimmers enter the recent Winter National Championships in Sheffield. The pick of their results was the 400IM where Jan Poulton came 15th in the open category, and Luke Poulton placed a respectable 10th in the U16 category, being one of only two 15-year olds to make the junior final. Luca Staines also performed brilliantly, placing 3rd in his age group. Congratulations to Michael Grachev for also performing in this National event.

Badminton
In addition to our recreational sessions, it is great to see such interest within our Year 8/9 and Year 10/11 Badminton Clubs. The work ethic and enthusiasm on display have been fantastic. We are looking forward to arranging some competitive fixtures soon! A huge thanks go to Mr Hoyle and Miss Brown for their excellent support in running the club.

Table Tennis
Our Year 7 students have had a great time attending the table tennis club on a Tuesday after school. Mrs Morsing speaks highly of the students in attendance and perhaps some competitive fixtures would be the next appropriate challenge! A huge thanks go to Mrs Morsing for running the club for these students and providing them with a positive experience in Year 7.

Fencing
Wednesday and Thursdays wouldn’t be the same without seeing our Fencers working hard in the Sports Hall. The students have enjoyed competitive fixtures against prestigious schools such as Eton and Harrow. The attendance at the club has been extremely promising. It is also fantastic to see the senior students help develop the younger students in the club and the pride they take in doing so – long may this continue! Thank you to Mr Eve, Jenny Douglas and Jacky Faulkner for all the hard work organising fixtures and running such sessions.

Fives
It has been incredibly pleasing to see the level of commitment and personal development from the groups of boys selected to receive coaching from Alex Abrahams from the Eton Fives Association who visits each Thursday. 24 boys from Year 7, 24 from across Years 8 & 9, and those taking Fives within TAA have so far benefitted from Alex’s coaching and have played in our first Fives fixtures for over 2 years! With more coaching available in January alongside fixtures against schools including Eton and Berkhamsted, the future of Fives at RGS is looking very positive! Thank you to Mr Fletcher for your hard work leading this programme.

Karate
A huge thanks also go to John Titchen for his continued hard work and support in delivering a high-quality Dart Karate club every Wednesday after school in the Sports Hall. The club provides the students in attendance with a wide range of skills. Well done to all students who have recently achieved their next belt – keep up the great work.

Thank you for all your support as parents. It is a true privilege to work at RGS and support your son in their journey. We hope you have a great Christmas holiday, and we very much look forward to continuing to provide as many positive experiences and opportunities as possible for your son in Physical Education, Sport and Physical Activity at RGS. Please do not hesitate to get in contact with me if there is anything you would like to share or discuss.

All the best

Luke Huelin
