With very few funds provided to the public, the government deployed an £8 million scheme to hand out free portraits of the King to the following institutions: Councils, Schools, Courts, Police, Fire and Rescue Services. This seems to be wasted money which could have been spent elsewhere to help the growing homelessness across London. A further £14 million was spent on security for the coronation. Security consisted primarily of military forces, who received a bonus for the event on top of their salaries, paid for by the taxpayer. Support for the monarchy has stagnated recently, especially among young people. "There is absolutely no need to go through with this expensive pantomime." Graham Smith, Chief Executive of Republic The Royal Family's official coronation picture.
