Technology Tournament 2008

Buckinghamshire Education  Business Partnership

The Technology Tournament, supported by the Rotary Club, was this year was held at the Chesham Leisure Centre on Friday 29th February, and the RGS entered teams in all three categories Basic, Intermediate and Advanced.

In the Tournament the boys were asked to work in teams of 4 and to plan, design and make a small practical solution to a specific technological problem given to them on the day.

This year, the task, was STRUCTURES based, and required the pupils to design a bridge structure that spanned a specific distance on a previously made model wooden base section using thin card, straws, string and glue.

The Basic Task involved a single span bridge.

The Intermediate Task involved a two span bridge.

Whilst the Advanced Task involved pupils designing a bridge that spanned two sections, and also included a rising section to theoretically allow boats to pass beneath the raised structure.

The pupils entered in the Basic Task were highly commended by the Judges and were Runners Up.

The pupils entered in the Intermediate Task, Peter Richards, Will Holmes, Henry Richards and Daniel Smith were the Winners of their section.

The pupils entered in the Advanced Task Duncan Stokoe, Matt Nally, Sabeel Ullah and Alex Wilkinson were also Winners of their section.

The boys all thoroughly enjoyed the day and found the tasks set both challenging and rewarding. The Advanced Team were specifically praised by the Judges for their solution and were invited to attend a Faraday Lecture in June.

Included in this article are some photographs taken on the day.
