Heatseeker!
Year 7 Heatseeker
The Year 7 Heatseeker event has once again been received with much interest and excitement amongst the RGS Year 7 pupils. There has generally been a very good turn out throughout the year with the quota of forty tickets always being sold out. Heatseeker is held on Monday lunchtimes every two or three weeks and involves a variety of different activities and games. With traditional Bond music, DVD clips, competitions and refreshments, it is not unusual for them to return to their afternoon lessons, with much more vigour and energy than teachers may have anticipated! Topics that have been discussed include the reasons for Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, his resurrection and the implications there of. This has been done in good humour with the pupils often actively participating in the dramatisation of parables and stories in the Bible. Hopefully their interest in the Bible, motivated by the Heatseeker meetings, will continue to grow as the year 7 pupils enjoy their future years at the RGS.
Year 8 Heatseeker
The year 8 heatseeker this year got off to a flying start with over twenty boys attending the first few meetings. As the year has progressed, the group has calmed down to a half-a-dozen or so keen and interested Year 8’s. Throughout the year we have enjoyed a range of exciting games, inspirational question and answer times as well as challenging talks from Mr Toller. The unbeatable combination of Year 11 leaders - Oliver Watson, Danny Graham and Sam Walters have taken heatseeker to a totally new level and meant every session has been memorable. We have each taken it in turns to give our testimony and explain how our faith impacts our lives. These were well received by the year 8’s who come along and provoked much discussion. If you’re interested to see what its like, come along next year!!
Year 9 Heatseeker
The year nine Chaplaincy group runs every fortnight on a Monday lunchtime. Despite numbers attending fluctuating wildly, there have been many constants, such as a well-oiled chaplaincy game, bad jokes from Mr Potter and some form of nutritional incentive. Highlights included a discussion of Jesus’ resurrection, a study of the Three Kings and people being officially labelled the "most stupidest person in the world". We tend to look at small passages in the Bible, focused around the significance of Jesus' death and resurrection on our lives. At Easter, we had a fascinating discussion about whether or not Jesus was who he claimed to be - the Son of God. There have been some enjoyable games and generally, time spent getting to know each other. This year it has been successful because not only is it great fun, but it also provides an opportunity for students to have their questions about Christianity answered.
