Chalpain's 6th Form Oxford Dinners
Many members of the sixth form enjoy the privilege of dining in style at the Chaplain's Oxford dinners. Pembroke College, Oxford hosts thirty five RGS students six times a year in their private function room called the ‘Forte Room’.
The Food
The evenings consist of leaving RGS, dressed in jacket and tie, at about 6.00pm and being greeted on arrival at the college with a glass of ‘Bucks Fizz’. An excellent three-course meal follows, in which every time without fail the roast potatoes are the best I have ever tasted. After the meal a guest speaker delivers a talk on the Christian faith.
The Speakers
The speakers have ranged from ex-Royal Marine Commandos to our own Head of Physics and many things in between. Every speaker is of the highest calibre and every talk thought provoking. There is always a valuable opportunity for pupils to ask the speaker any questions they like. The speakers have all responded remarkably well to some very difficult and challenging questions, giving answers based on what the Bible says and including their own personal experience. Around the tables, informal discussion flows naturally from what has been said and this often continues on our journey back to RGS.
Try One!
It is a misconception that these evenings are only for Christians or for religious types. This could not be further from the truth. They are brilliant evenings and cause several people to see things in a different light. I would urge any student to try them out, although tickets sell out fast so you need to get in quick.
