Mrs Girling can be contacted through the Careers department at the RGS. She visits the school regularly and gives presentations to Y9, 10 & 11 during their careers lessons. She interviews boys at school, on request, particularly those in Y11 who are undecided about their future after GCSE’s. She also gives presentations to Y12 & Y13 on university applications, Gap Year options and local jobs. She is also available to give interviews at school for any boy in Y12& Y13. She is present at Y10, 11, 12, & 13 parent’s evenings. When students have left the RGS at the end of Y13 Mrs Girling will have any contact details for local employment opportunities that have been sent to the school.
If you would like to see Mrs Girling through school please contact Dr Philpott.
Work Experience
The work experience co-ordinator for the school is Mrs Nicky Catling.
Work experience & work shadowing are organised through the High Wycombe office of the Education Business Partnership (EBP). This takes place in Y12 and boys are given an application form to complete at the beginning of the autumn term. This form needs to be signed by parents/guardians. Placements of up to one week take place during holidays unless, in exceptional circumstances, employers cannot accommodate boys at this time. Permission from the Head of Year must be obtained for any boy to carry out work experience or work shadowing during school time.
Boys on placements organised through the EBP are covered by the school’s insurance policy. For boys wishing to study medicine or veterinary science work experience is essential. In addition to that that can be organised through the school boys should try and arrange their own through family, friends, G.P., local vet clinic etc. Also, a commitment to this work should ideally be demonstrated through part-time or voluntary work in a care home, farm etc. The school does organise a Thursday afternoon activity through which boys can do voluntary work at Wycombe General Hospital. This activity is strongly recommended for those boys wishing to study medicine or a related health profession. Advice on this can be obtained from Mrs Catling or Dr Philpott.
Mrs Catling also organises groups of boys to attend residential conferences at university to gain an insight into Medicine or Veterinary Science. Called Medsix and Vetsix these usually take place in December. Mrs Catling has further details.
Work experience in Y11
Any boy who will be leaving the RGS after GCSE’s should try & do his work experience in Y11. This can be arranged through the careers department and boys should approach Dr Philpott for more information on this.
In addition Mrs Catling gives a presentation to all Y11 during the Spring term on how to organise one’s own work experience during the long Summer vacation after GCSE’s. As this work experience is not organised through the school it is important that parents & boys make sure that the company has appropriate insurance to cover them for accidents and injury to themselves & personal liability. Although unusual for work experience it may be appropriate for your son to become a temporary employee & be paid since this would give them automatic insurance cover. Your own household insurance policy may cover your son so this is worth checking. Please make sure yourselves that the work environment for your son is safe.
Work experience in France
This program is for Y12 and arranged through the Language department. Boys spend one week working in a business in France. It is an exchange organised with the Lycee Victor Hugo in Colomiers near Toulouse. Between 20 & 30 boys travel to France together accompanied by a member of staff. Their exchange partners return to the UK as a group and carry out work experience organised by the EBP. This is an option available to any Y12 boy regardless of whether he takes French at A-level. Minimum requirement is a grade “C” in GCSE French.
Work experience records
On completion of work experience boys should summarize this on no more than one side of A4. This should be given to Mrs Catling for filing. Also some employers are happy to complete a report form that should be similarly filed. These report forms are available from Mrs Catling. Boys are advised to keep their own copies of these for reference, particularly when they complete their UCAS form or apply for a job or training. Boys who carry out work experience through the EBP will receive similar forms for completion and these should also be copied and one set given to Mrs Catling.

Parent, Old Boy and Business Links
Careers education and guidance (CEG) is an ideal forum for the RGS to build links with the business community.
There are 4 main areas of participation
1. Work experience provision. We are grateful to those parents who provide placements for some of our Y11, 12 & 13 boys. We are always looking to extend our contacts and would be delighted to hear from any parent, guardian or old boy who may be able to offer placements from just a few days to a couple of weeks.
If you think you can help in this area please contact Dr Philpott at the school or Email jep.staff@royalgrammar.bucks.sch.uk
2. Careers Fair. This is held biennially in the summer term. If you would be willing to give boys and their parents’ advice & information about your profession by participating in this event please contact Dr Philpott.
3. Young Enterprise. Available for Y12 and organised by Dr Goodier, Mrs Roberts and Dr Philpott. Up to 40 boys take part annually in this scheme forming their own businesses with the help of advisers from local business. If you are able to help in this area please contact Dr Goodier, Mrs Roberts or Dr Philpott.
4. Y10 Into Industry Days. Organised through The Education Business Partnership and Dr Philpott. If you have experience of business and could give up one or two days in July we would be very grateful. Please contact Dr Philpott.
