Royal Navy
RN Cadets at RAF DanesfieldThe Royal Navy Section is an important part of the RGSHW CCF; the absence of the sea nearby being no major handicap, as we have an excellent sailing facility at RAF Danesfield on the Thames.
Two officers run the section: Lt Cdr C R Greenhugh RNR and S Lt N F Dickson RNR. They are supported by visiting Officers and SNCOs from the Royal Navy. The most important component to running the section is the senior cadets who choose to stay on voluntarily, without whom the section would not operate so efficiently.
Cadets are taught a balanced combination of seamanship skills (sailing and navigation techniques) in conjunction with 'green' soldiering and adventurous training. This year for the first time the RN Year 10 cadets have been put through the L98 A1 weapon handling test so that they had the option of joining the Army and RAF Sections on FTX.
Training Initiatives
We are hoping to buy a boat trailer and some 420s dingies in order to improve the section's sailing abilities ,and to enter the National Schools Sailing Championship at Chichester every year. This year the RGSHW CCF RN Section entered the competition for the first time in its 30 year history.
Sailing on the ThamesCourses
In Easter 2007 six cadets went scuba diving in the Red Sea and succesfully passed their BSAC Ocean and Sports Diver courses.
RN Cadets are able to go on a vast range of courses funded by the Royal Navy. Last year cadets attended Leadership Weekends, Powerboat Training, Sailing, Adventurous Training with the Royal Marines, Pilot and Observer Courses, Fleet Air Arm Aquaintance Courses and a summer camp at HMS Bristol.
