U13 reach semi final of county 7 a side.
RGS are always playing catch up in year 8 when it comes to our hockey teams. With most of the boys only starting hockey this year the improvement in skill level and tactical knowledge from the start of the season has been significant. This was shown in the county mini's tournament where the boys came through a tough group to qualify for the semi-finals. Having played 6 games in the group, and conceeding only 2 goals to the eventual winners Marlow HC the boys showed their strength. Unfortuantly in the semi final we could not maintain this level and lost 4 - 1 to Beacon School. Well done to all involved, especially Matt Lambert playing in goal.

St Georges 6-a-side Tournament
St Georges is one of the most prestigious dates in our hockey calendar. It allows the best players from the southern hockey schools to battle on half a pitch. We started the tournament strongly with a 3-2 Win Over St Edwards School, Oxford. Unfortunately, back to back 1-0 losses over Dr Challoner’s (Cup Winners) and Desborough dashed our hopes of a place in the cup. We fought back well with 2 wins and a draw in our last 3 matches. This however was not quite enough, we finished 4th in our very competitive pool of 8. 1 point of a place in the plate. Our mid table finish ensures automatic qualification for next year.
The 8 players representing the school were Jay Lanchbury, Dan Thompson, David Maunder, Matt Henshaw, Will Budge, Jonny Maunder, Hugo Jafari and Scott Darroch. Special mention must go to Matt in goal who made some sublime saves and Jonny who scored over half our goal tally (5 our of 9).

U16 South of England Finals
The under 16 team travelled to Canterbury in order to play the qualification tournament to be entered into the National Quarter Finals. Five teams from across the South of England had qualified from winning their respective county tournaments. Two of these teams would progress from a round robin style tournament. RGS played Langley Park school in the first match and despite taking an early lead we lost 3 - 1. This meant we now needed to win our final 3 matches, which we duly did; winning 3 - 0 vs Simon Langton, 2 - 0 vs Eastbourne College and 3 - 2 vs Merchant Taylors. Special mention goes to Scott Darroch for scoring 5 goals on the day and Josh Mardell of year 9 representing the year 11 team and performing to a high level.
Having finished in second place we now play the winners of the East of England, Ipswich School. This is to be played in Ipswich on Friday 14th March at 2:30.

Under 16's win County Cup Final
The county cup final was played against local rivals John Hampden Grammar School. RGS took the lead after 15 mins through a penalty corner routine that saw Hugo Jafari deflect the ball into the roof of the net from close range. This lead was then built on by Joe Kelleher finishing off a superb passing move from the RGS backline right through to the forwards. After half time John Hampden came back at us with two quick goals to level at 2 - 2. RGS continued to play the better hockey and Ali Stephens turned in a Joe Kelleher cross from the right wing to give RGS a 3 - 2 lead. Despite more chances at both ends of the pitch the game finished 3 - 2. The Regional Finals will be played in Canterbury, Kent on Sunday March 2nd.

Under 14's lose out in thrilling cup final
The boys under 14 team took on a strong Sir William Borlase side at Bisham Abbey in the Bucks cup final. Having played Borlase only a few weeks earlier and having lost 6 - 3 we knew they were a side who could score goals. The match started in exactly the same fashion as our previous encounter, RGS going down 3 - 0 before half time. This time however we reacted better and got one back just before the half time whistle blew. At 3 - 1 we felt we had a chance. In the second half, although we conceeded first we ended up winning the second half 4 - 2, a great performance to bring the score back level at full time to 5 - 5. Extra time started with both teams in search of a golden goal, that would take them to the regional finals in March. Unfortuantly for RGS Borlase struck first to win the tie. Josh Mardell (RGS) scored a hat trick in the game and well deserved his man of the match performance.

U16 Indoor Hockey South of England Tournament
Having qualified from the previous round as winners of their group the RGS team enetered the traditionally highly competitve tournament with much confidence. Ten teams competed for the honour of representing the south of England at the national finals. The team had an excellent start winning the first three games. Requiring just a draw against either Kingston or Whitgift School to make the semi-finals we lost both games. Kingston and Whitgift ended up in the final themselves to take the two qualifying spots for the national finals. A story of being so close but no cigar on this occassion - next comes the outdoor competition where we play Dr Challoners in the Bucks semi-final. (see fixture list for dates)

Introduction of New RGS Hockey Games Shirt
A new hockey games shirt will be available to all hockey players shortly after the October half term. The shirt will be a light weight hockey playing shirt to replace the heavier 'rugby' games shirt. All 'a' team players will be required to purchase the shirt as this will be part of their team playing kit. Shirts may be worn for all hockey games sessions.
The expected cost of the shirt will be between £18 - £20, these will be sold at cost price, the school will not be taking any profit from these.
