Types of Governor

The RGS has 22 Governors including two Sponsor Governors.  The term of office for all types of Governor is four years.

Foundation Governors - The RGS Trustees appoint five Foundation Governors.

Parent Governors - there are seven Parent Governors elected by the parents, including carers, of registered pupils at the School.  They do not have to stand down if their child leaves the School, though they may do so if they wish.  Parent Governors may stand for re-election at the end of their term of office if they still qualify.  If not enough parents stand for election, Parent Governors may be appointed by the Governing Body.  A person is disqualified from election as a Parent Governor if they are a County Councillor or work at the School for more than 500 hours in a school year.

LEA Governors - there are two LEA Governors appointed by the LEA.  A person eligible to be a Staff Governor at the School is disqualified from being appointed as a LEA Governor.

Staff Governors - there are four Staff Governors including the Headmaster.  At least one Staff Governor must be a member of the Support Staff, the other two positions are taken by members of the Teaching Staff.  Staff Governors must be paid to work at the School.  Volunteers are not eligible.

Community Governors - there are two Community Covernors appointed by the Governing Body.  Community Governors are people with expertise and experience from all backgrounds and with local community, business and professional interests.  County Councillors or a person eligible to be a Staff Governor at the School are disqualified from being appointed as a Community Governor.

Sponsor Governors - the Governing Body appoints two Sponsor Governors.  The definition of a sponsor is wide ranging, though the connection with the School must be that substantial assistance has been given either financially or in kind.
