Introduction

FlyingFlying The RGS has the best CCF RAF Section in the UK.

This is not an idle boast; of all the RAF Sections in the country ours is the only one to have been placed in the top three at the National Ground Training Competition for two years on the trot. Competitions do not tell the whole story though: compared with our rivals at the top I believe we have arguably the most dynamic and diverse training programme with RAF cadets being invited and trained to take part (and in some instances lead) in our Army Section Field Training Exercises. Every year our Year 12 boys achieve gliding scholarships and the opportunity to fly solo, and against fierce competition we have had cadets in Year 13 win places on Flying Scholarships. Our Ground Training team does not rest on its laurels for each member knows that there are other keen cadets training to take their place.

Syllabus

The RAF Air Cadet Syllabus is divided into three main parts and is far more academic that that of its peers. The subjects outlined below are designed to occupy 30% of CCF time in school, a further 30% is devoted to leadership exercises and the 40% to adventure training. Completion of an adventurous activity to a specified level is a core requirement of the Part Three award.

Part One:

Drill, Military Knowledge, use of Map and Compass, Shooting and Safety (No.8 and L98 rifles), Airmanship (safety on airfields and how aircraft fly/glide), the Tutor (a safety brief on the RAF training aircraft), First Aid. All RAF Cadets who have studied these subjects may have flying lessons.

teamwork and leadership trainingteamwork and leadership trainingPart Two:

Principles of Flight, Basic Navigation, Airmanship II.

Part Three:

A formal 8 week leadership course (and opportunity to go away for a week on an Army or RAF run course), one specialist aviation subject, one adventurous activty (eg 3 star level in Kayaking) or one specialist course (such as a gliding scholarship).

Although the 'blue' syllabus of the RAF Section is quite academic, its programme is physically demanding. In addition to classroom study cadets can expect to use assault courses, swimming pools, climbing walls, high and low rope confidence courses and engage in fieldcraft training to represent some of the work of the RAF Regiment and Tactical Communications Wing.
