David Levin
In 1993 David Levin joined the Royal Grammar School as only its fifth Headmaster this century. His advent virtually coincided with the successful application by the Governing Body for RGS to become a grant maintained school, thus affording it a wider responsibility for the management of its own affairs. These two co-incident events brought fresh impetus to the school throughout a period when education was attracting diminishing financial support from Government, and at a time of increasing debate about school and teaching standards.
David Levin is South African by birth. He attended schools in Africa before obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Economics.
He then came to England where he gained a Master's degree in Economics and also served articles with a law firm in London. Deciding however to make teaching his permanent role, he took up teaching posts at Whitgift School and Portsmouth Grammar School and then, moving on, came to Wycombe via Cheltenham College where he was both a Boarding House tutor and Second Master.
David Levin brought to reality a Language College and a new Boarding House have been ; the science laboratories were refurbished and enlarged by the addition of a new Biology laboratory, and other improvements to the campus were effected. He was responsible for developing and securing supportive relationships and financial support from industrial sponsors - HSBC, Vickers and British Aerospace in particular.
Throughout his tenure there was an essential and continuing call for fund-raising, and the school benefited from his exceptional and dedicated efforts in that field. His personal financial expertise and awareness was of tremendous benefit to the school. His decisiveness in getting things done was recognized by his appointment to the Headmasters' Conference as one of the very few state school heads accorded that honour.
Further recognition of the success of these activities in all fields came with the acceptance by H.R.H. The Duchess of Gloucester of an invitation to visit the school and formally to open the new Language College.
David Levin left RGS in April 1999 to become headmaster of the City of London School.
