Spanish Department
¡Bienvenidos a todos! Flamenco, films, fiestas… Baile, beaches... Sangría, sol
Welcome to the Spanish department at the RGS! We are a dynamic and energetic department and our aim is to give our students a sound grounding in the Spanish language but also a wider understanding of Hispanic culture, both through our lessons and also through our Year 10 trip.
The majority of our pupils start their Spanish studies as complete beginners and enjoy the opportunity to sample Spanish as part of the Year 7 Language Taster sessions. In Year 8 a large percentage of the year group elect to study Spanish as their second foreign language and, by the end of Year 9, when it is time to choose their GCSE options, they have a sound grasp of the basics of the language. In Years 8 and 9 we follow the Caminos 1 and 2 text book course.
The Spanish Department is very proud of its Year 10 and Year 11 students and the excellent results that they achieve at GCSE level. We use the Caminos 3 text book, which is supplemented by magazines and other authentic resources, and pupils are entered for the AQA board examinations. Undoubtedly the most popular part of the course is the study trip in April, which offers an excellent opportunity for students to experience life in Spain and life within a Spanish family.
The A Level Spanish course allows students to take their command of language to a new level as they examine topical issues such as popular culture, the media, healthy living, family and relationships, the environment, the multi-cultural society and contemporary social issues. Students learn how to discuss these areas in Spanish and once a week they have a lesson with our Spanish assistant. The students are also given the opportunity to focus on a series of cultural topics which have included in the past Almodóvar, Perón, García Márquez and the region of Cataluña. All topics studied provide our pupils with both a source of intellectual challenge and much enjoyment. We are delighted that several of our A Level students each year choose to continue their Spanish studies at university and many of them plan to spend their gap year in South America.
Please do look at the rest of the Spanish pages to get a flavour of the many events and trips that we organize as a department and to see some of the superb work produced by our students.
