RGS Medical Society
Getting a place at medical school is one of the most challenging feats that any school student can undertake.
Well before entering the sixth form, he needs to start enhancing his curriculum vitae by improving communication skills, teamwork, scientific knowledge and gaining some medical related work experience.
Thorough research into the different types of courses and what Universities are offering is a crucial part of the process and this means studying all prospectuses and visiting institutions. Most medical schools now expect students to undertake an admissions test – either the BMAT or UKCAT – so this is another hurdle to cross.
The Medical Society run by Mrs McDavitt and Mrs Royal was set up to help, support and encourage students along this difficult path. There are regular meetings with external speakers. UCAS forms and personal statements are vetted and boys are prepared for interviews. Mrs McDavitt organises the BMAT examinations and always has the latest information on the UKCAT.
At the start of Year12, about 40 hopeful candidates come to the RGS Medical Society meetings but, at the end of Year 13 only the most dedicated and conscientious students actually receive an offer.
This year eleven students have gained places at Medical Schools and, if they attain excellent grades this summer, a new and worthwhile career will open up to them.
Many congratulations go to the following:-
