NEW ERA FOR FIVES

CLOSE

Monday, 22 Feb 2010

We were delighted to learn that The Eton Fives Association  has made its largest ever donation to repair and improve the our Fives courts.   (Below - original plans from 1923 )

Fives court plans

In addition to a donation of £5,000, the EFA/EFCT are making an interest-free loan of £10,000 to refurbish the two courts: this will involve new floors, repairing and making good the walls and installing a new roof and lighting.

The original cost of the courts was £494 - according to the Wycombiensian article in 1923.

This agreement represents nothing less than the opening of a new era for Fives at RGS High Wycombe. It will enable future generations at the school to enjoy this wonderful game, to play matches against other schools and to participate in competitions.  Eton Fives is set to become an integral part of the School games programme.

The two courts were erected in a central position in the school as a memorial to former pupils who were killed in the First World War, and it is hoped that they will be open for use by the end of the current season.  They will also be available for use in the evenings by Old Boys and anybody in the local community interested in playing or learning the game.
