Croatia 2012 On the 2nd of April 2012, the World Challenge Croatia trip set out at 11:15. Everybody was extremely excited, and couldn’t wait to go, despite the enormous loads we had to carry in our rucksacks! After flying from Gatwick we soon got to Zagreb airport where everybody changed their money, got into the minibus, and fell asleep.
At 3:00 in the morning we pitched our tents next to the sea in the dark. When we woke up 3 hours later the view was amazing; there was a pebble beach where you could skim stones, and see an island and the Adriatic Sea. After a breakfast of cereals and milk we decided to go kayaking towards the north, where we stopped at a small vineyard. On day 3, we set out to the mountain hut with our rucksacks, which were now lighter. It was a challenging climb but we eventually made it to the hut and relaxed for the evening. Whilst we were there we stopped to look at the river, which flowed nearby. That night we ate mush (half boiled rice with tomato puree). Fortunately, we all had sweets to compensate! After we woke up, we walked up a narrow track to the Black Peak, which took us all quite a number of hours to reach the grassy summit. The view was stunning when the mist finally cleared. We were able to look across the National Park to see snowy peaks and vast forests. After lunch on the mountaintop we took our time over the journey back down to the mountain hut to make sure we didn’t trip over as our legs were tired. When we got to the hut and looked at where we’d walked, there was a great sense of achievement amongst the group On day 5 we went down the mountain, stopping at a cave on the way. It was massive, approximately 30 metres high at one point and around 40 to 50 metres wide at the entrance. Compared to the Hellfire Caves it was like the biggest giant ever. I have never seen anything like it. After the descent, we went to the first camp along the river rapids course. That night we slept in tents.
Day 6 was the start of rafting. We rafted over many white water rapids and through rain until we reached the wild camp. Here we put up our tents and didn’t come out for the rest of the night as it was driving rain and the wind from a peninsula is pretty cold.
On the last day, we went over many waterfalls and rapids to get to the end of the river journey. It was great fun, and even sunny, unlike day 5. The river journey was a great way to end the expedition and one of the best parts of the trip.
