Pupils, ignoring the new school rule that protective clothing must be worn in games involving conkers, risked life and limb to engage in the age-old contest.
Mr Pantridge insisted, however, that the ruling was a sensible one. "It is thoroughly reckless for pupils to play this hazardous sport without goggles, ear-defenders and protective gloves. These can be purchased in the school shop for less than 20 pounds and it is a price worth paying for safety in the playground"
Newparents are urged to invest in the new conker-safety kit when their sons join the school.
