NATIONAL MODERN PENTATHLON CHAMPION

CLOSE

Wednesday, 01 Sep 2010

August was a busy month for Joshua Radvan  (Chalfont Otters & RGS).  On the first weekend, he was in Salford for the National Biathlete Championships (a continuous run, swim, run event format).  He won the U19 boys title and in doing so qualified for the World finals to be held in Dubai at the end of October.

The last weekend of August he was in Solihull for the National Modern Pentathlon Championships, consisting of all five disciplines, swim, fence, ride, shoot & run.

The first event was the swim, where he posted a time well below his best and found himself in 5th place overall.  His performance in the fencing was very strong. He placed first of all the Youths and Men combined, winning the competition and therefore lifting himself up into 1st place overall.  The ride came next where he again performed well, being one of only two boys to complete a clear round and score maximum points.

Going into the final event, the combined shoot and run, he was therefore in 1st place.  He completed the first two sets of 5 targets and 1 km runs in an average time and was therefore joint leader going into the final 5 targets.  He then shot a personal best time to knock them down in 23 seconds and give him the luxury of a very long lead to run the last 1km and take the gold medal.

This is Josh’s last UK competition as a Youth – he now moves on to competing with adults in the Open and Junior (U21) competitions next year.  He also leaves R.G.S this summer and is looking forward to taking up his place in St Catharines College, Cambridge University were he hopes to compete for the University and continue his development in the GB team.

As he moves on from the local sports scene he would like to take this opportunity to thank all at RGS for their continuous support and to his Chalfont Otters coach Guy Massey.
