Saturday 19th June Vs Watford Grammar School

RGS               128 all out,  Watford GS   129-6             LOST BY 4 WKTS

On an overcast day RGS 1st XI returned to action with a home fixture against Watford GS, their first fixture for nearly a month.

Losing the toss and being asked to bat, RGS were soon on the back foot against a hostile and pacy opening bowler who extracted bounce from the bowler friendly pitch, which was also a little two paced. With the batting a little under normal strength, RGS found themselves staring at a rather embarrassing total as we were reduced to 18 for 5. It was left to Jonny Collin and debutant Dan Maunder to steady the innings and this they did with a gritty partnership and a small amount of luck on the way.

Jonny scored 25 and Dan 37 as the tail managed to bat their way through to the 39th of the 40 overs scoring a total of 128.

Unless early wickets were forthcoming the result was going to be straightforward but the first four bowlers all did extremely well. Tom Hemming took 3 wickets and he was ably supported by Josh Mardell, Tom Francis and Matt Millns and after 20 overs Watford had rather limped to 42-5 having at one stage been 16-4.

After the drinks interval things began to turn Watford’s way and with some big hitting from the same player who had done all the damage with the ball Watford eventually squeezed home by 4 wickets.

RGS played extremely well and very nearly pulled an unlikely victory out of the bag but were essentially undone by the firepower of one Watford player. Great credit was due to the players for recovering from that disastrous start. They showed excellent fighting qualities and very nearly produced an outstanding victory.
