DOWN AT THE RIVER

CLOSE

Sunday, 23 May 2010

The Boat House at Marlow on a Sunday morning is a busy place.  RGS pupils are out training for several hours - and not just on Sundays.  Mr Shreeve and Mrs Hailstone ferry boys back and forth during the week too.

In the Autumn Term up to October, and in the late Spring Term and Summer Term, there are after-school training sessions every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  These are primarily for the boys in Years 7, 8 and 9 who do not get rowing as a games option.   There is also training on Saturday and Sunday.
The coaches are Geoff Baker (Commonwealth Gold Medallist  in the 1950s) and Colin Jackson (England squad member in 1960s).  Geoff coaches on Mondays and Wednesdays and Colin on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Both are out on Saturdays and Sundays.
Games options are:
Monday Year 10s
Tuesday Year 11s
Wednesday Years 12 and 13

We have about 7 boats, which include a launch, which the coaches use when training on the water, an octuple (8 rowers and a cox), 2 quads (4 rowers and a cox) and a few double and single sculls.
Reptiles (the parents) raises funds for repair of existing boats and purchase of new vessels.  We need sponsorship, but that is very much in the lap of the gods.

The parents (aka Reptiles) organised a summer rowing training camp last July/August.  From the proceeds of that, they purchased a new quad (Mr Richard Shreeve) and a new double (Liz Charleston) which were named at October half-term and have been used continuously ever since.

Everyone's hard  work, and here we must mention their coaches again,   Geoff Baker and Colin Jackson,  is paying off.  The J14  Coxed Quad with its Year 9 crew have had two outstanding successes in recent weeks at Nottingham and Bedford.

We wish them luck in the National Schools Regatta on 28th May .
