Athletes from around the world gathered to compete in the 11th Biathle World Championships 2009, which was held at Larvotto Beach, Monaco.

Biathle has been practised for over 50 years and combines the two basic elements of Modern Pentathlon, running and swimming, in a continuous format

Josh Radvan (Chalfont Otters and Royal Grammar School) competed in the U19 category, having won the U17 event last year in South Africa.

He started his first 1500m run at a steady pace and entered the water in 7th place.  The 200m swim is usually one of his strengths and once again he swam strongly.  However in the usual jostle entering the water his goggles were dislodged and as a result he was unsighted and swam a long way of course and consequently ended up swimming a lot further than necessary.  To compound this he took a wrong turn at the transition and had to run back a few metres to get back on course, finding himself now in 4th place for the final run.

This left him with a clear target for his second 1500m run.  He ran very well and managed to overhaul two athletes ahead of him before being caught himself by a South African athlete who ran very strongly to take the silver.

Overall he was however very pleased with his 3rd place and is looking forward to improving on this next year when he runs in the same age group.
