A group of thirteen Year 8 boys, plus Mr Bennett and Miss Eastham travelled to the mystical country of Morocco over the Easter holidays. We arrived in Marrakech on Saturday afternoon, and spent the rest of the day beginning to explore the Souks and the famous Djamaa El Fna Square. Early the next day we travelled by minibus about 2 hours into the depths of the High Atlas Mountains. There we were surrounded by 4000m+ snow-capped peaks and stunning landscapes. The afternoon was spent exploring the local area, visiting some remote villages and haggling in the local markets.
On Monday we trekked over a mountain pass into a neighbouring valley, camping on a hillside near the village of Ouaneskra. The most challenging day’s trekking lay before us. We were to climb from 2000m up to a mountain pass at over 3200m – virtually the same height difference as climbing Ben Nevis. After a tough day’s trekking we finally reached the summit – a fantastic achievement for everyone!
Tuesday was spent trekking along picturesque river valleys up to a high (and very windy!) campsite where we played a huge game of football with the local villagers. The final day of trekking took us through various wooded valleys, across a river and on to our final campsite in a pine forest.
Upon returning to Marrakech we spent most of the day haggling deep into the Souks, buying various souvenirs of our trip, and eating a delicious meal on the Square.
A truly memorable trip for all involved!
