RGS High Wycombe is a top state selective day and boarding school and takes boys from surrounding state schools at age 11, as well as preparatory and international schools. There are 70 Boarders at Fraser Youens House, 75% of whom are weekly and 25% of whom are Full Boarders.
With over 400 years of experience, RGS High Wycombe combines the best of both worlds, merging the 24-hour approach of the Boarding school model into the state sector. We offer an outstanding boarding provision at approximately one third of the cost of many independent boarding schools. Boarding at RGS High Wycombe has a long tradition of providing an education for boys to excel academically, as well as a national reputation for sporting and co-curricular achievement.
Our Boarders are self-confident, well spoken, and enterprising young men, who are given a range of opportunities for leadership through their time in the Boarding house. To ensure that every boy settles in quickly and thrives in Fraser Youens, each student has his own personal Boarding tutor who supports them throughout their time in Boarding. Only if someone is happy and content will they be able to reach their full potential. All Boarders are encouraged to take part in the community in a variety of ways; for example there are a range of Boarding councils, opportunities to mentor younger pupils, an extensive activity programme and our Prefect system.
RGS High Wycombe is one of the few state schools to offer an unparalleled depth and breadth of subjects at 6th Form. This helps pupils to identify their signature strengths and achieve consistently high academic standards. Boarders achieved 90% A*-B at A-level in the latest public exams, and all achieved their first choice university place. Due to the structure and support programmes in place Boarders have outperformed those in the Day school by 5-15% over the past six years.
Our Boarders have full access to all of the school’s facilities outside of school hours. These include an indoor heated swimming pool, fitness suite, tennis courts, and our new all-weather pitch. The school fields top class rugby, hockey, cricket, tennis, fencing, Eton fives and rowing teams and this offers those who have a passion for sport the very best opportunity to excel with many students going on to play at a national level. Including sport, there are over 80 activities available to the boys over the course of the academic year ranging from Music, Drama and climbing to pursuits such as Archery, Dodgeball and Cookery to name a few.
Charity, community work and volunteering are integral to life at RGS High Wycombe. Boarders are encouraged to take part in a variety of interests, such as the opportunity to work as a volunteer in local schools, hospice and nursing homes, join the popular CCF programme or complete the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
The school is very proud of its Boarding community, the pupils always challenge themselves, push their horizons and become world-wise, self-assured, high-achievers. They are truly an inspiration to the whole school and move on to careers of distinction, influence and service.
