RGS Hockey has a long-standing place among the sports offered within the school. The hockey department works from the ethos of providing excellent hockey coaching to all pupils regardless of experience or ability. With lessons and teams across every year group, boys have the opportunity to play at a standard of competition that suits their ability and desire.
Hockey is the main sport in the Easter term and is offered to all boys from Year 7 through to the Sixth form. We currently run A–D teams at U12 and U13, and A & B teams at U14 and U15. These all feed into our Senior Squads at U16 and U18 level. All age groups take part in their own National Cup competition.
We are lucky enough to have our own high quality, brand new all weather pitch for training and matches, and our hockey players also have access to our fantastic fitness suite in which they can take part in their own Strength & Conditioning to improve performance on the pitch.
In the Autumn term we run indoor hockey at the U14, U16 and U18 age groups, the latter two taking part in their respective national indoor championships. Training and fixtures take place at our own indoor pitch. Indoor hockey is used as a way of preparing for the outdoor season as well as being an enjoyable alternative to the 11-aside version of the sport.
In the Easter term all boys at RGS have the opportunity to play hockey for their houses in the Inter-house hockey competitions.
The results for 2017 are as follows:
Our team of coaches bring a huge amount of experience from outside the school to benefit the players. Currently our team boasts experience of both playing and coaching at National League level and coaching in the England Hockey Single System, as well as working with senior and junior international players.
How families can support hockey at RGS
Fundraising through the RGS Friends of Hockey
Hockey at RGS benefits enormously from parents’ support. The majority of the money we raise goes towards funding regular training for all year groups with graduate and/or guest coaches. We also help finance essentials such as equipment, competition entry fees and transport costs.
If you would like to know more about the RGS Friends of Hockey, or better still, could volunteer to help with fundraising in any way, large or small, please contact us here.
Join the RGS Friends of Hockey for 2016-17 by completing our subscription form – just £40 per year via cheque, Parentpay or standing order.
Links with Clubs
We play all our school fixtures mid-week which allows us to release our hockey players to play for clubs on weekends. This is seen as integral to their development as it exposes them to different opportunities and environments as well as giving them a platform to get involved in playing adult hockey.
RGS has particularly strong links with Gerrards Cross Hockey Club, Wycombe Hockey Club and Amersham & Chalfont Hockey Club. The quality of coaching is at a high level and the clubs put much time into their Junior sections.
