Religious Studies

Religious Studies is taught to all boys at the RGS in Years 7 to 11. The focus is upon a multi-faith approach involving the study of six major religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Hinduism.

The Department recognises the fundamental importance of promoting the study of values, beliefs, customs and rituals that give meaning, purpose and direction to life, endeavouring to reveal the essential relevance of these elements to every student. Students are also encouraged to engage in a personal process of reflection and discovery of their own views and beliefs. To assist with this process, the introduction and improvement of thinking skills is a fundamental part of this course.

The Department also teaches A Level Philosophy. Students who enrol in this stimulating and rewarding course soon find that they are improving their analytic abilities while studying the work of such influential figures as Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, Mill, Bentham and Wittgenstein. The students' own philosophical abilities are also encouraged, making this a skills based course in which the formal elements of argument and logic form the basis for further study.
